Apl315

In the colorful streets of Prenzlauer Berg, the new mural by Apl315 unfolds, created during his time in the Fresh A.I.R program of the URBAN NATION Museum. Inspired by the wall drawings of his Ukrainian homeland Odessa, Apl315 weaves in a touch of Berlin air. A tribute to the mysterious Odessa catacombs, adorned with mathematical equations and vivid everyday scenes, honoring the history of Prenzlauer Berg as a working-class district. Apl315’s palette combines the deep black of charcoal drawings with the yellow of historic Berlin buildings and subway trains that run along Schönhauser Allee – a visual poem that unites past and present. The mural can be found at the corner of Stargarder Straße/Schönhauser Allee, right above Spreegold.

Project M/20: Gen+Esc

Exhibition

Project M/20 | Gen+Esc

Welcome to the opening exhibition of the Satellite Gallery in Neukölln, the new temporary exhibition space of the URBAN NATION Museum. URBAN NATION presents the latest solo exhibition by the artist RABI in the Project M/ series titled “Project M/20_generati0n+escape_//thoughts_and_c0ntradicti0ns//_seas0n_01:02_BERLIN,” curated by Michelle Houston. The exhibition encompasses short films, installations, printed editions, and ceramic sculptures.

The artworks take us on a fascinating journey, capturing individuals in green screen suits within their everyday surroundings while they share their deepest thoughts and emotions. These works delve into important themes such as identity, belonging, and navigating the challenges of global change.

A striking aspect of these artworks is the often-existing disparity between the inner and outer worlds of the protagonists. Some lean towards escapism, creating contradictions between their inner selves and their external appearance. This underscores our society’s obsession with public self-presentation and simultaneous pursuit of individuality.

In a world shaped by the digital age and over-curated experiences in artificial realities, the question arises: Are we destined to seek freedom through escape? Can we accept the ubiquitous and deeply rooted contradictions between our inner and outer lives? This exhibition invites you to explore these questions and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of contemporary art. The Satellite Gallery in Neukölln offers a unique artistic experience that you won’t want to miss.

Remember Resistance 33-45 – The Heilmann Family

In Charlottenburg-Nord (Berlin), the facade of Habermannzeile 1C now bears a powerful Mural by street artist Paula Marie. The project was a collaboration between Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand, Stiftung Berliner Leben and Gewobag. This striking mural pays homage to the heroic resistance against National Socialism, particularly honoring the Heilmann family, whose names grace the streets of the Paul-Hertz-Siedlung area.

Capturing the essence of defiance, Paula Marie’s mural poignantly depicts Ernst Heilmann, namesake of Heilmannring, alongside his wife Magdalena, daughter Eva, and Else Behrend-Rosenfeld.

Crafted in collaboration with students from the Anna Freud School, the mural’s design journey was a two-day deep dive into the Heilmann family’s history, enriched with artistic techniques shared by Paula Marie.

“We all belong to ‘We’ here” – A Community Mural in Spandau

In the Heerstraße-Nord district of Spandau, you can admire the new mural “We all belong to ‘We’ here” by the Berlin artist duo Various & Gould. This unique artwork embodies the spirit of community and diversity that characterizes the neighborhood.

Located at Obstallee 45 in Spandau, the mural is the result of a creative workshop conducted with local youth centers STEIG and Staakkato. The teenagers had the opportunity to photograph each other, with these photos forming the basis for the sketch by the artist duo. Each of these images contributes to the collective face of the neighborhood, giving the mural a deep, personal touch.

This artwork reflects not only the faces of the community but also symbolizes the unity and connectedness of the residents in the Heerstraße district. It shows how individual personalities and stories come together to form a vibrant and diverse community.

The mural “We all belong to ‘We’ here” is more than just a public art installation; it is a living testament to the strength and cohesion in the Heerstraße district. A visit to Spandau offers the perfect opportunity to admire this fascinating artwork while experiencing the unique atmosphere of the neighborhood.

Project M/19: LONELINESS AND OTHER FALSE FRIENDS

Exhibition

Project M/19 | LONELINESS AND OTHER FALSE FRIENDS

The group exhibition LONELINESS and other false friends is part of the series Project M/ by URBAN NATION.

Visitors of the main exhibition TALKING… & OTHER BANANA SKINS at the URBAN NATION Museum were asked to share their opinions on topics they believed should be discussed in society. An impressive majority raised the issue of mental health.

The showcased artworks in the exhibition delve into the processing of emotions and the challenges that modern life poses to mental health. Loneliness is identified and intensified as one of the main factors contributing to mental illnesses. The exhibition presents paintings, installations, and sculptures that encompass the entire spectrum of urban and contemporary art.

On the occasion of the opening of LONELINESS and other false friends and as part of the Gallery Weekends, the exhibition theme was also taken up by Berlin artists commissioned by URBAN NATION. They created a new series of murals on C-Walls (community walls) that can be discovered in the vicinity of the project space.

Zum Heimathafen

Mural

Zum Heimathafen

Alex Hanke is the creative head of Zum Heimathafen, which is both a studio for graphic design and illustration, and a screen printing company with a strong focus on concert posters and portable drawings.

For the student dormitories of “Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg”, Alex created a design that easily could be realised on the grainy surface of the facade, matching at the same time the location and the two different sides of the structure itself.

Despite the amount of different sized windows or the front wall’s edge of the building, the design manages to create an overall impression, combining all its parts.

According to the artist himself, the design would have been more detailed if conditions were different but Alex, who describes himself as a problem solver, did not compromise anything and found in the complexity of such a task the incentive to deal with it and overcome it.

Stohead

Discover the fascinating world of Christoph Haessler, also known as “Stohead” – one of the most renowned street artists in Germany. With an impressive artistic journey that began with graffiti in the 80s and later evolved into the art of calligraphy, Stohead has developed a unique creative vision that seamlessly bridges the realms of street art and calligraphy.

In 2022, Stohead created and brought to life an impressive facade at the new residential complex “Waterkant” by Gewobag. This 750 square meter canvas became his palette, where he breathed life into words with flowing forms and gentle colors that adorned the surface of the building.

What sets Stohead’s art apart is that his works are not only breathtaking but also seamlessly integrated into the architecture. The flowing forms and soft colors perfectly harmonize with the structure of the building and the surrounding landscape. This artwork is not just a visual delight; it’s also a tribute to the symbiosis between art and environment.

Discover the artistic genius of Stohead, who with his street art masterpiece captures not only the eyes but also the hearts of viewers. His works tell stories, connect the past and the present, and create an impressive visual experience that must be experienced.
