Zum Heimathafen

Mural

Zum Heimathafen

Alex Hanke is the creative head of Zum Heimathafen, which is both a studio for graphic design and illustration, and a screen printing company with a strong focus on concert posters and portable drawings.

For the student dormitories of “Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg”, Alex created a design that easily could be realised on the grainy surface of the facade, matching at the same time the location and the two different sides of the structure itself.

Despite the amount of different sized windows or the front wall’s edge of the building, the design manages to create an overall impression, combining all its parts.

According to the artist himself, the design would have been more detailed if conditions were different but Alex, who describes himself as a problem solver, did not compromise anything and found in the complexity of such a task the incentive to deal with it and overcome it.

Mural

Stohead

Christoph Haessler aka “Stohead” is one of the most famous street artists in Germany.

Starting his artistic path from a graffiti background in the late 80´s, Stohead specialized in calligraphy with a focus on typeface and letters.

In 2022 the artist designed and realized a facade of 750 square meters of the new residential complex “Waterkant” (a project developed by Gewobag) in Berlin-Spandau.

The flowing shapes and soft colors of the words painted on the surface of the building blend with the architecture while simultaneously harmonizing with its structure and the surrounding environment.

Inside Out Project

With the aim to celebrate the diversity of the city, URBAN NATION Museum invited the local community to an exceptional project that took place over the course of two days.

The team of Inside Out Project came to Berlin with its very special photo booth truck, where participants could have their portraits taken.

The posters printed from the photo booth truck were directly put on the walls of Kreuzberg’s buildings in a live-pasting action that saw the enthusiastic participation of people, who shared good vibes, genuine interest, and excitement throughout the whole process.

Part of these 333 portraits of Inside Out Project are currently displayed in the exhibition TALKING… & OTHER BANANA SKINS at URBAN NATION Museum.

Hundertzehn

Communtiy Wall

Hundertzehn

Stencil artist Hundertzehn from Magdeburg produces highly detailed works of art. Both outdoors on city walls and facades and indoors on mobile backgrounds such as canvases and panels.

Hundertzehn’s works are mostly figurative depictions with a strong reference to urban space – the artist’s original working environment. Intense colours run in the background and form the basis of his artworks.

His latest work adorns the fassade of a children’s day-care centre on the ground floor of Bülowstraße 55.

Júlia Mota Albuquerque (Land of Júlia)

Júlia Mota Albuquerque (aka “Land of Júlia”, a Brazilian artist based out Berlin), was the winner of the first Street Art contest “MORE ART, less litter”.

Together with Naturschutz Berlin Foundation, BSR Berliner Stadtreinigung, Berliner Leben Foundation, and URBAN NATION Museum, we organized an open call directed to the local art community, which was invited to develop a concept for a mural dealing with topics such as waste avoidance, packaging waste and recycling.

Júlia’s wall is located on a building facade of Gewobag at Jakob-Kaiser-Platz in Berlin.

Talking … & Other Banana Skins

Exhibition

Talking … & Other Banana Skins

With its new, rich and colorful exhibition called “TALKING… & OTHER BANANA SKINS”, URBAN NATION Museum wants to tease and invite the viewer to a dialogue with Urban and Contemporary Art.

The show, curated by Michelle Houston, acts as a catalyst for a conversation about some of the most critical questions of our time by addressing the polarization of our society, and encouraging visitors to question their own perspective and the multi-layered nature of conflicts and issues which cannot be pigeonholed.

The artworks presented in the eight chapters of the exhibition question how and what is communicated in society and in the urban environment, putting the focus back on exchange and dialogue.

From paintings to installations, from sculptures to videos, “TALKING… & OTHER BANANA SKINS” covers the entire spectrum of Urban and Contemporary Art, and includes artists such as Rocco and his Brothers (Berlin), Icy and Sot (Tabriz/NY), Various and Gould (Berlin), Joséphine Sagna (Hamburg), Low Bros (Hamburg), and Broken Fingaz Crew (the internationally renowned Israeli collective that redesigned the Museum’s facade) among others.

Broken Fingaz Crew

Mural

Broken Fingaz Crew

Along with the new exhibition “TALKING… & OTHER BANANA SKINS”, URBAN NATION Museum got a brand new facade designed by Broken Fingaz Crew (aka BFC, a renowned artist collective from Haifa, Israel.)

BFC is known for their vibrant murals and the variety of techniques they use to create their art.

Their works aim to provoke and evoke a reaction in the viewer, by dealing with political and social issues.

With the mural made for URBAN NATION Museum called “Dog Sniff Dog”, BFC focuses on the way people communicate nowadays. The dogs sniffing each other’s bottoms are a metaphor for the never-ending cycle of futile communication in the age of social media, while their eye-catching colors match the ones of the exhibition as well.

Frederick’s

Mural / Interior

Frederick’s

For the new opening of “Frederick’s” – perhaps one of the largest and most glamorous restaurants of Berlin, located in the Sony Center, in the heart of Potsdamer Platz – we invited three artists to paint its interior.

In addition to delicious dishes and fancy drinks, “Frederick’s” can now boast a special feature design, where contemporary murals echo the past while celebrating the present and its culture.

Based on the building’s architecture, the local conditions, and inspired by the design ideas of British architect Robert Angell, our curator Michelle Houston together with artists Daan Botlek, Leiti and Johannes Mundinger, gave each room a very unique touch.
